What is addictive thinking? It is a way of thinking that doesn’t match with reality. Many addicts are raised in families with addictive thinking or another way of putting it, a worldview that has rules and responses that are not aligned with being healthy. Especially in relationship with others.
The addictive thinking precedes all addictions and allows the addict to continue in his/her choices that leads to the addictive behaviors (alcohol, drugs, sex, overeating, etc.). Simply stopping the behaviors doesn’t solve any problems but rather is like putting a finger in the cracked walls of the damn as the millions of gallons of water pushing against the other side. Eventually, the addictive thinking simply switches.
The best way to change addictive thinking is to seek counseling and join a group of recovering addicts that are working to change. Hearing other addicts talk about their issues allows the addict to hear himself/herself and challenge his/her beliefs.
