Committment to Recovery - Sexual Addiction

To recover from sexual addiction, it takes a "marathon" committment rather than a "sprint" committment.  Recoveing from sexual addiction has been described as the most difficult journeys of recovery (more than drugs, alcohol, or other addictions).  To anyone attempting to start the recovery journey, please understand: recovering from sex addiction is a battle that you must really want to win.  An Alcoholics Anonymous phrase fits: “You must be sick and tired of being sick and tired.”  There are no “half measures” to recovering from sex addiction.  It must be your top priority!  If it isn’t, than you haven’t experienced enough misery yet.

You are beginning one of the most difficult journeys of your life: recovering from sex addiction.  Please understand: recovering from sex addiction is a battle that you must really want to win.  An AA phrase says: “You must be sick and tired of being sick and tired.”  There are no “half measures” to recovering from sex addiction.  It must be your top priority!  If it isn’t, than you haven’t experienced enough misery yet.

Recovery from sex addiction requires you to get into a regular pattern of tough recovery work.  You are fighting to change many, many years of conditioning.  Recovery will not occur overnight or even over a couple of weeks.  Sex addiction recovery is a marathon, not a sprint!  Get ready to work!

How long will recovery lasts?  Some experts say it is a three to five year process.  Your recovery may be longer or shorter.  There are multiple factors that affect how long recovery lasts and determine the type of duration of treatment.  The most important factor is your willingness to work.

Recovery is both a state of mind and a set of actions.  While individuals say they are “in recovery,” unless there are recovery actions to back up that statement, they are at risk of losing their sobriety and returning to their compulsive behaviors.

What does good recovery look like?  Persons in recovery are busy doing the work of recovery.  Recovery is something a person does!

You will need time set aside time to complete the many recovery tasks established in this packet and in the “Facing the Shadow” workbook, attend 12-step groups, call other group members, etc.  The tasks will only work, if you work them.  Recovering from sex addiction is a change of direction and change is never easy!  Set aside time each day in order to work on your recovery from sexual addiction.

Great article and I totally agree! Healing from sexual addiction requires hard work and a strong committment to stay the course.
